Head high, she swept out of the room. Head even higher, she swept back in. Scalera cringed for her sister, now shamed and broken. Jerk, she thought at the Doyen,

Should’ve kept your lips to yourself if you were going to go and have a vision.

The desire to punch him in the gut rose up like a bad meal, making her stomach clench around the idea of having to marry him.

Not happening. I am not a slave to fate. I will make my own fate or die trying.

With one last glance, Scalera slipped out of the ball.
