Coping mechanisms

So we’ve talked a lot about what the FAS beast looks like, but how do we cope? How does a poorly trained, no background in special needs parenting mom deal?

The answer? Trail and error. A lot of error. I think you all want to know what has worked so far. At the beginning I was dying to know just that. So I’ll give it to you straight. I listened to my kids. I ignored the adults. I talked to good therapists. I passed out in bed every night. I slept too little I cried on my knees all the time.

One of my favorite things we did was exercise a lot. I mean tons! We hike. Weekly. We work out at the gym where they go to the daycare or at home where they participate. If they loose control, they run up and down the stairs or from the fridge to the bathroom and back.

The motion seems to help them align and get focus. It’s not scientific but it has been very successful. So my point is moving regulates the missing pieces.
